March 8, 2010 - 62th ANNUAL SkillsUSA TEXAS LEADERSHIP AND SKILLS CHAMPIONSHIPS

The SkillsUSA Texas Leadership and Skills Championships begin March 25th and will run through March 27, 2010 in Corpus Christi, Texas, at American Bank Center, Del Mar College, The Omni Bayfront Hotel, and The Craft Training Center of the Coastal Bend. The Championships will have over 5,200 students, instructors, and industry representatives at the Championships. During the event, these outstanding students enrolled in career and technical courses – all district contest winners compete in hands on events in over 150 different trade, technical, and leadership fields.

During the State Championships, students work against the clock and each other, providing their expertise in occupations such as computer aided drafting, cosmetology, criminal justice, automotive design, automotive collision repair and restoration, computer maintenance, and culinary arts. The Craft Training Center of the Coastal Bend will also host welding, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and masonry skills contests on site. All contests are supervised with the aid of industry, trade associations, and labor organizations. All contest regulations are held up to current industry standards that are used in the work place. In addition, leadership contestants demonstrate their talent and skills that include extemporaneous speaking, parliamentary procedure, and leadership events.

SkillsUSA is a national partnership of students, teachers, and industry, working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. SkillsUSA chapters help students who are preparing for careers in technical, skilled, and service occupations. SkillsUSA has more than 280,000 students and instructors as members nationwide. SkillsUSA Texas alone has over 13,000 students and instructors making it the second largest state association.
