“This year’s Disney On Ice is truly magical with Disney properties that are packed with heart and personality,” says Producer Nicole Feld. “We have princesses that are exuberant and strong-willed, but we’ve also expanded the roles of spirited supporting characters, so that they’re more prominent in the show.”
Skaters burst out onto the ice with an explosion of color for the mesmerizing introduction that includes a dance-off-sing-off between the boys and girls, led by none other than Mickey and Minnie. Family members will feel like they are part of the show as they are encourage to get off their feet and dance along to music featured on the Disney Channel.
“We are taking a fresh new spin on how we’re presenting the Disney stories,” says Producer Juliette Feld. “We are weaving together the four worlds of royal sisters Anna and Elsa, Ariel, Belle and Rapunzel as they each embark on their own epic journey.”
Audiences will be whisked away into the wintery world of Arendelle to join royal sisters Elsa and Anna, the hilarious snowman Olaf, rugged mountain man Kristoff and his loyal reindeer Sven as they discover true love conquers all. The Academy Award®-winning animated film comes to life on ice and is packed full of action, adventure, magic and unforgettable characters.
“In our more than 30 years of producing Disney On Ice shows, Feld Entertainment has been waiting for a film like Frozen,” says producer Nicole Feld. “The most exciting part of bringing characters like Anna and Elsa to the ice for the first time is knowing that they have a powerful and inspiring message the resonates with audiences as the sisters discover the true meaning of love.”
Feld Entertainment has once again pushed its cast of world-class skaters to the limit with a Spanish web act featured during The Little Mermaid segment. Ariel transforms from mermaid to human when she emerges from Ursula’s cauldron, and dangles 35-feet over the ice, showing off her brand new legs.
“Everyone will be in awe as they watch Ariel slowly pulled upwards and then rapidly twirl above the ice,” says Director Patty Vincent. “This is the first time that we’ve captured her transformation like this in a production. That’s what makes Reach for the Stars different, we selected scenes we’ve never done before and then took our time on the details to make them truly special.”
In Beauty and the Beast’s “Be Our Guest,” the theatrical elements of the glitzy napkins and silverware costumes will astound audiences. Costume Designer Cynthia Nordstrom brought the castle’s enchanted entourage to life by choosing fabrics that unfold as the performers raise their arms, and attaching pieces that extend the costumes.
“The costumes are designed to emphasize the overwhelming amount of table décor that appears in the movie,” says Nordstrom. “The napkins unfold to increase their size and the forks tower over the heads of the performers. This is a big moment for Belle; the costumes need to reflect that.”
Every aspect of Beauty and the Beast is exaggerated and over the top, enticing the crowd to follow along on the adventure. Gaston leads a giant mob of villagers with real fire torches to track down and “Kill the Beast,” the iconic red rose is oversized with petals that actually fall, and the castle set is whimsically shaped, giving it an animated feel.
These set elements and more, including the stunning chandelier that lights up as it drops down in “Be Our Guest,” were created by Scenic Designer Walt Spangler, in his first Disney On Ice production.
Spangler designed multiple pieces that sit on the ice to create a three dimensional set, allowing the characters to interact with it by climbing and skating underneath them. “The set not only needs to come out onto the ice, but create a backdrop for each of the stories,” says Spangler. “We were able to do this by designing an Austrian curtain that masks the background and can rise in sections by gathering fabric up from the bottom.”
By raising and lowering in sections, the curtain adds a stage presence to the ice show. It can open or close on either end for individual characters, without interrupting the overall scene. It also extends the blank canvas of the ice and takes on the show’s lighting designs. This is especially evident when Rapunzel receives a warm welcome home to her kingdom.
Maximus trots front and center as everyone comes together to greet Rapunzel and Flynn with a grand flag routine and lantern launch. The lights from the floating lanterns reflect off both the ice and the curtain, which serves as the backdrop for the scene. The combination of the curtain and the lighting design adds depth to the scene by multiplying the lanterns and making them appear off in the distance of the night sky.
Lighting plays a crucial role in giving the production a truly magical feel as well. In addition to carefully selecting colors that paint each of the four stories onto the ice and curtain, Lighting Designer Sam Doty chose lighting patterns that will energize the audience during the talent portion. “The colors really pull you into the different worlds of the princesses, but it’s how the lights are arranged that command your attention when the characters are performing their acts,” Doty says. “For example, when the Daughters of Triton are introduced, the lighting individually highlights each of them. Your eyes follow the spotlights.”
Disney On Ice presents Reach for the Stars wraps up with a light stick show as the Disney rock stars reappear for an exhilarating send off. Ariel, Belle, and Rapunzel are joined back on the ice by their charismatic Disney friends along with sisters Anna and Elsa who return to wish the audience farewell. With so much talent and storytelling jam packed into one show, Disney On Ice truly brings the magic.
