Corpus Christi Ballet Presents: The Nutcracker December 13-14, 20-21
The Nutcracker Ballet Returns for its 40th year to the American Bank Center Selena Auditorium
(Corpus Christi, TX November 24, 2014) – The Nutcracker turns 40! When the Corpus Christi Ballet presents its popular ballet “The Nutcracker” this December, it will celebrate 40 years of continuous presentations of this well-loved holiday classic. This year’s production will feature a cast of over 150 dancers and actors, lavish scenery and costumes, some new choreography, exciting guest artists and a wealth of local talent.
Four local dignitaries will play the role of “Mother Ginger” and international guest artists Jun Shuang Huang and Yosbel Delgado will join the cast. The coveted role of “Clara” the young girl whose special dream comes true will be performed by four local dancers. Ashley Arteaga, Dec 13th, Cheyanne Rowland, December 14th, Abarrane Henderson December 20th and Alexis Peter, Dec 21st.
The curtain opens on Clara’s family living room where a holiday celebration is taking place. At the party Clara receives a magical Nutcracker as a gift from her Godfather, the mysterious Dr. Drosselmeyer, played by Xavier Barrera.
After midnight the enchantment begins. The Nutcracker becomes lifesize and wages a fierce battle with the Rat King, huge rats, scurrying mice and troops of toy soldiers. Clara helps the Nutcracker to victory, and as a reward she is taken on a magical journey through the land of Snow to the Kingdom of Sweets. Here she meets the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Prince and is entertained by colorful characters from many lands. The first weekend will be our family weekend, with performances on Saturday December 13th at 7:30pm, and a matinee on Sunday December 14th at 3:00pm. (all tickets will be ½ price this weekend. $6.50 to $16.50)
The following weekend will be the Gala performances on Saturday, December 20th at 7:30pm and the matinee on Sunday, the 21st at 3:00pm. The Corpus Christi Ballet Orchestra will accompany the Gala weekend performances, playing Tchaikovsky’s beautiful music led by guest conductor Dr.William Reber.
The Sugar Plum Fairy will be danced by Elizabeth Hooper and Mia Carvalho, and the Snow Queen by Heidi Erin Alford, Mia Carvalho and Shaela Yeager. Guest artists Michael Bannigan and James Vargas will partner them. Samuel Brehm, will play The Nutcracker and Derek Turner and Sean Abshire will share the role of the Rat King. A wonderful cast will bring this famous ballet to life at Selena Auditorium for the start of the Holiday season, continuing the tradition on the 40th anniversary year.
