Las Doñas de la Corte Present “The Court of Celebratory American Festivals and Events”
marking the 62nd year of the annual Buccaneer Days Coronation
CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS – (April 9, 2015) – Las Doña’s de la Corte is proud to present “The Court of Celebratory American Festivals and Events” on April 30, 2015 at the American Bank Center Selena Auditorium. This year marks the 62nd year of the annual Buccaneer Days Coronation, which is rooted in history, resounds with pageantry and honors a rich and glorious heritage. In 1954, at the request of the Civitan Club, Las Doñas de la Corte staged the first Buccaneer Days Coronation Pageant promoting Buccaneer Days festivities throughout the state. The King’s Men organization was formed to further publicize the city and to assist Las Doñas de la Corte with the court.
The Coronation is modeled after a royal court recalling the Spanish rule of Isabella and Ferdinand. King Alonso represents the 16th century explorer, Alonso de Pineda, who discovered Corpus Christi Bay. The presentation of the King and Queen is a closely guarded secret until the very end of the Coronation when they are crowned. Las Doña’s de la Corte is committed to producing a yearly coronation pageant rich in South Texas tradition and honoring local and out of town families. Throughout the 62 years, hundreds of families have participated in this community event. Several duchesses in this year’s court represent the second and third generation of their family’s participation.
Mrs. Henry M Sapp., president of Las Doña’s de la Corte, has announced that the official Court Designer of this year’s 62nd annual Coronation Pageant is a talented dream team of artists and designers; Jeffery Linthicum, Becky Davis, Lura Tullos Dietze, Susan Crow Hicks, Karen Humphrey and Carol Thaxton with direction from Yma Valls Urban, Wardrobe Chairman, who worked closely with the artists. For almost two years 23 royal robes, dresses and trains have been designed to depict this year’s theme of “The Court of Celebratory American Festivals and Events.” Each Duchess will be adorned in a magnificent hand tailored costume that will bring to life the vision of American festivals and events in vibrant colors and celebratory flair.
On the surface you see an explosion of festive colors and patterns, but upon deeper inspection some of America’s rich history and heritage comes alive. From coast to coast, the diversity, culture, and resilience of the American people are depicted in this theme. Couturiers Georgette Afram, Gloria Bechara, Samia Bechara-Palfreyman, and Andres Contreras, have brought the royal robe designs to life. It is with great pleasure that Las Dona’s de la Corte cordially invites the public to attend the 62nd annual Buccaneer Days Coronation on April 30, 2015 at the American Bank Center Selena Auditorium beginning at 7:30 p.m.
Immediately following the Coronation is the Coronation Reception, which will be held upstairs in the Henry Garrett Ballroom at the American Bank Center. At the reception, guests will have the opportunity to meet the Duchesses and Royalty and observe the intricate designs of their costumes up close. Light hors-d’oeuvres will be served and a cash bar will be available.
