The Tenerife Symphony Orchestra revolutionized the way of understanding orchestras in Spain starting with the meteoric national and international success that it enjoyed in the eighties, when the resident conductor, Victor Pablo Perez, achieved a sound and technical perfection that put it in the vanguard of Spanish ensembles.
Created in 1935 as the Canary Islands Chamber Orchestra, it was conducted from the start by the Maestro Santiago Sabina. Then between 1968 and 1985 this responsibility fell upon the Maestro Armando Alfonso. In 1970 it became known as the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra. In the 1985/86 season, it was conducted by Edmon Colomer. From 1986 to June 2006 the Maestro Victor Pablo Perez held this position. In July 2006, the conductor of Chinese origin, Lu Jia, was appointed Artistic Director.
A large number of its twenty-eight recordings have obtained highly-significant Spanish and international awards, such as the Cannes Classical Awards, Grand Prix de l'Academie Francaise du disque lyrique, Premio Ondas (in 1992 and 1996), the Choc award of Le Monde de la Musique, Diapason D'Or (on 1994 and 1995), as well as prizes for the best disc of the year from the magazines, CD Compact and Ritmo.
