About Coppelia: Coppélia is a sentimental comic ballet with original choreography by Arthur Saint-Léon. It was based upon a macabre story by E.T.A. Hoffmann entitled "Der Sandmann" ("The Sandman"), published in 1815. The ballet premiered May 25, 1870 at the Paris Opera.
This story is about a girl named Coppelia that sits on her balcony all day reading. She has never smiled or talked to anyone. The friendliest girl in the village, Swalinda, can’t even catch her attention. One day Franz was throwing his kisses up at coppelia trying for a response. Swanilda skips in, looking for Franz, as he is her boyfriend. She sees Franz blowing kisses at Coppelia, and gets annoyed. They were to be married the next day, but as the burgomaster comes around asking if she will be wed, she says no, and runs away in tears. That night Coppelia’s father Dr. Coppeius, takes a stroll in the park, he drops his house key, not noticing that it’s gone. Swanilda finds the key, planning to sneak into see Coppelia sitting in her usual chair reading her usual book. Swanilda said hello, and started cracking up! "She’s a doll!!!!!", Swalinda cries.
