Event Details: El Mejor Mariachi del Mundo, the greatest mariachi in the world, will take stage at American Bank Center Selena Auditorium Saturday, March 8th. The Mexico City-based 12 member group Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan will celebrate its 110th anniversary during the Coastal Bend Area Mariachi Festival. This 3-day event celebrates Mexican cultural arts through mariachi music while promoting higher education among Hispanic youth.

Mariachi Vargas has recorded more than 60 CDs and has been featured in more than 200 films and music videos. The group is known for recording with hundreds of Latin music artist including Luis Miguel on his Grammy Award-Winning CD Mexico en la Piel. Mariachi Vargas accompanied Linda Ronstadt during her Canciones de Mi Padre tour and was featured in the nationally aired PBS special Mariachi: The Spirit of Mexico.

Opening for Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan is Mariachi Javelina from Texas A&M; University, Mariachi Azucenas, an all-female mariachi from the Rio Grande Valley and first place winners of the elementary/middle and high school mariachi group competitions. One best overall vocal compeition winner will also be invited to perform.

Student mariachis will participate in the Dia del Mariachi workshops and competitions and on Saturday, the concert will feature the winners of the mariachi group and vocal competitions and the world renowned Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan.
