USBC - From a town of only 5,500 in southwest Iowa, a group of nearly 100 bowlers, friends, and family made the trip to the 2006 United States Bowling Congress Open Championships.
The rural town of Shenandoah was well represented at the American Bank Center Exhibit Hall this week thanks in large part to Junior Taylor, owner of Taylor's Bowl, who organized 13 teams from his small hometown.
The Shenandoah delegation wasn't always so large. In fact, Taylor was alone when bowled in his first Open Championships (formerly the American Bowling Congress Championships Tournament) as a sub in 1989. He has been hooked ever since, and his following continues to grow every year.
"I was pretty intrigued with what I saw there," Taylor said. "When I came home, I told everybody about it, then the next year I think we had four teams going, and it grew from there."
While everyone was in Corpus Christi, the eight-lane bowling center with above ground ball returns was closed for business.
"If I'm not home, it doesn't run," said Taylor, who wasn't even a bowler until he purchased Taylor's Bowl. "We have some part-time help, but that guy is here bowling. It's OK, though, we wanted to do some remodeling anyway. We're putting all new carpet in, so we just locked it up for a week to have a good time down here."
Now, local bragging rights belong to Taylor's team, Taylor's Bowl 1, which turned in the best performance of the bunch Monday with games of 783, 892, and 881 for a 2,556 total.
Taylor's son Tim led the way with 597, followed by Kent Hoxie (509), Taylor (495), Sam Lansdown (490) and Stephen Nokes (465).
"I would guess that per capita, I have as many bowlers as any city in the United States," Taylor said. "I've always wondered about that."
On Tuesday, Taylor added 533 in doubles and 499 in singles for a 1,497 all events total. In the end, Taylor and the rest of Shenandoah's bowlers turned in a championship effort, but none were able to find a new home atop the tournament leaderboard.
