USBC - Fresh off a win at the United States Bowling Congress Team USA Championships in January, Dan Patterson of West Seneca, N.Y., made the trip to Corpus Christi, Texas, on Saturday, hoping to add a USBC Open Championships title to his growing resume.

Patterson, who is the first of several USBC Team USA members scheduled to compete in the 2006 Open Championships, survived a grueling 56-game format and out-distanced 150 other competitors on the way to becoming the U.S. Amateur champion last month in Reno, Nev. The win also earned him a second consecutive berth on Team USA.

"That title is the biggest thing I've won in my entire life," Patterson said. "I'm not really used to being in the limelight, so it can get difficult. There are times on the lanes where instead of thinking about the shot, or zoning in, I'm still a little bit outside of myself. It's just going to take a little transition before I get comfortable. I've been flying under the radar for so long that I liked being the guy that nobody knows."

Although the 30-year-old right-hander would've loved to add a coveted Open Championships eagle to his trophy case, Patterson knew his recent success wouldn't necessarily give him an edge this weekend at the American Bank Center Exhibit Hall.

"With so many elite players who come to this event, luck definitely becomes a factor on top of skill," said Patterson, a tax preparer for H&R; Block. "For five people in the team event to all match up at the same time on a good pair, and all get a decent reaction and catch a few breaks - that's magical, and that's what it takes to win."

On Saturday night, Patterson shot 583 and helped Shuffle Master Gaming of Gilbert, Ariz., to a 2,827 team total. Patterson added 609 in singles and 593 in doubles Sunday for a 1,785 all-events effort, and also helped Shuffle Master Gaming into fourth place in Team All-Events with 9,008.

And while there won't be an Open Championships title for Patterson this year, he's ready to use the event as a stepping stone as he prepares to continue his winning ways across the globe with Team USA.

"Team USA is going to have a big year," said Patterson, who earned four medals at the Lee Evans Tournament of the Americas in Sunrise, Fla., last August. "We're going to Korea to bowl in the World Championships, and our men's team hasn't won gold there for years, so we'll be there with a vengeance."

But even with so much success already, Patterson still likes to dream big and hopes to become a fixture on the Denny's Professional Bowlers Association Tour someday.

"I've had to work pretty hard to get to where I am," Patterson said. "I've always admired the pros who go out year after year and fight for every dollar. But I love this game so much that I don't want to stop before I peak. Hopefully I won't reach that peak until I'm 70."
