The band Saliva will perform, adding its unique combination of "Southern Rock and Edge Metal" to an already over the top event, as Fightfest combines hard rock with its global search for the next mixed martial arts (MMA) superstar. Saliva known for hit songs like “Click Click Boom” and “Rest In Pieces” will take the stage prior to the Fightfest events.
Two of the featured fights include Corpus Christi’s own Hector Munoz will battle for a world championship in front of his hometown fans as he goes for the Fightfest 155-pound title against Jay Estrada. In another title fight, Eric “Butterbean” Esch will go after the Fightfest super heavyweight title as he battles Matt Eckerle.
Munoz teaches at the Corpus Christi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Full Contact Fighting Academy, which has three locations for children, beginners and advanced students. Munoz has also set his sights on the world record for earning a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The record is three years, nine months. Munoz has earned a brown belt in three years, three months.
Munoz (11-2) knows that Estrada (17-4) is a dangerous opponent. “Estrada has done it all, winning by decision, submission and knockout,” said Munoz. “Even if a fighter is 0-6, I won’t take him lightly. I’m very happy to have this fight here. I feel it’s my chance to get to the big leagues.”
Estrada was born in Mexico City and moved to Chicago when he was 1 month old. “Jose was in gangs as a kid and he was in jail for a few months at age 17,” said Estrada’s manager, Mike Davis. “Through fighting, he was able to turn his life around.”
Estrada said he will pose the greatest challenge of Munoz’ career. “I’m not very impressed with the people he has fought,” said Estrada. “I’m pretty confident. Hector has to prove his respect to me.”
Other top fights include Cory Falter vs. Petrus Walker (from American Top Team); Wilson Gouveia vs. Todd Seyler; Mike Listerom vs. Shawn Freeze; Top Chynaimen vs. Ricky Gomez; and other fights featuring Brian Rosas, Ryan Durbin, Ken Kirk, Patrick Durbin and Jeff Messina.
