February 15, 2008 - Shaye Montgomery tied a school-record with six three-pointers to lead Texas A&M-Corpus; Christi to a 74-53 win over Nicholls State in a Southland Conference crossover matchup.

Montgomery was perfect from the field, hitting 7-of-7 attempts to lead a trio of Islanders in double-figures with 20 points. Elisa Beagle put in 15 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, while Deziree Green added 10.

The Islanders dominated the first 10 minutes of the contest, taking a 26-9 lead that included a 14-0 run that proved to be the difference as they improved to 5-4 in Southland Conference play. During the Islanders run, Nicholls State couldn’t buy a bucket and went scoreless for nearly seven minutes. Katherine Plummer hit a three-pointer with 15:06 to go to pull within three (12-9), but the Lady Colonels would not score again until Nikina hill hit a 15-footer with 8:30 to go.

“That was probably the best first half we have played all year,” head coach Rob Robinson said. “We had 20 assists tonight, so we had good ball movement against a 2-3 zone.”

The Islanders took advantage of poor shooting once again, going on an 11-3 run late in the first half, capped off by a 10-foot jumper by Cooper. Nicholls State scored just three points through a four-minute stretch. For the game, the Lady Colonels shot just 29.3 percent from the field, but made 5-of-11 three-pointers. Plummer was 3-of-3 from behind the arc to finish with a game-high 26 points.

A&M-Corpus; Christi took a 42-22 lead at the half, hitting 50 percent from the field as well as beyond the three-point line. The Islanders were not as fortunate the second half, hitting just 39 percent in the second, outscoring the Lady Colonels 32-31. “I am proud of the way we played today. I wish we could have kept our intensity up in the second half, but overall, I think that is the best 40 minutes of basketball we have played all year,” Robinson said.

All but two Islander players that saw action scored at least two points, while four had at least five rebounds. For the game, A&M-Corpus; Christi out-rebounded Nicholls State 44-33.

The Islanders will remain at home Saturday when they host Southeastern Louisiana at 1 p.m. in the American Bank Center.
